Victoria B.C.: Fans were treated to a fast-paced, hard-hitting match in the Margarita Villains 186 to 129 win Saturday (September 24th) over the Belles of the Brawl at the Rumble at the Ridge part two – Roller derby’s return to Langford after the inaugural game at Eagle Ridge nearly 10 years ago.
The first half of the game was incredibly close, with tie scores and tentative leads. Margarita Villains coach, Capt Nick, was impressed with his team’s rally after halftime: “[We] really came together in the second half, put some solid walls together and had some good hits. All in all, it was a close, hard fought game and everyone had a great time on the track”. The Wife of Wrath was awarded MVP by the Belles for her impressive jamming efforts.
Belles’ Co-Captain, Hot Piece-A-Sass, was named MVP for her strong performances jamming and blocking. After the game, she expressed how proud she was of her team on track this weekend:
“We’ve come far this season, with hurdles to jump along the way. We didn’t win the championship, but we didn’t make it easy for our opponents! The grit and effort of our jammers to never give up against the Villains’ defense was was amazing. We had great communication and unity on the track, which manifested in some well-timed, big hits by our blockers. It was a pleasure to be apart of!”
Some of the league members that were involved in last night’s bout were part of the original Rumble at the Ridge a decade ago, including Haul Ass Hanna, Ruby D. Vixen, General Disorder and Choka – who described the experience as nostalgic:
“I had totally forgotten about skating in from the side for the intros. That took me back hard. What was awesome was seeing how far derby in Victoria has come. Back when I started we skated in a parking lot. I wasn’t sure derby would last this long, or grow like it has. But I love that it is still around and still flourishing.”
Prior to the headlining bout, the Eves’ Junior team, The Rotten Apples, fell to Nanaimo’s Candy Crushers 339-182. Rotten Apples Co-Head Coach, The Wife of Wrath, commented on the improvement she has seen in her team this season and that the final score does not reflect how well they did.
The MVPs for the Junior bout were Terminate-Her (Rotten Apples) and Acer (Candy Crushers).
The Eves would like to thank our fans, sponsors, and volunteers for their continued support during the 10th season of roller derby in Victoria!
The Eves now head into their off-season, and will prepare for the 2017 season with weekly practices at Eagle Ridge and cross-training at Real Fit.
