ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia – Trinity Western continued its preseason winning ways as the Spartans earned a three-set win over Thompson Rivers and also won a bonus fourth set Saturday at MEI.
Playing in his old gym, third-year Spartan Ben Lieuwen (Abbotsford, B.C.) led the way as TWU beat the WolfPack for the second night in a row, winning the four-set match 25-20, 25-10, 25-19, 25-18.
The evening’s contest also saw first-year Kaden Gamache (Abbotsford) and second-year Jordan Koslowsky (Abbotsford) both return to play in their former high school gym.
“It was pretty cool that we got to honour three of our MEI guys at MEI,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “Kaden got his first ever Spartan kill, Jordie set the last set and a half and Benny played all four sets and was probably the man of the match.”
The Spartans were also able to rotate through almost their entire lineup while still managing to win all four sets.
“We got everyone in tonight except Leigh Goossen (Kelowna, B.C.), who played last night,” Josephson said. “The first set was super competitive and could have gone either way. The next set, we served great and had unreal runs by both Jacob Kern (Edmonton) and Ben Lieuwen. Then in the third set, the game settled into some good volleyball and the fourth set was the same.”
The Spartans will now prepare for their trip to Eastern Canada, which will see TWU play 11 matches in 11 days.
