Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Medicine Hat Tigers forward Chad Butcher has been named the WHL Player of the Week for the week ending September 25, 2016.
Butcher registered seven points (1G-6A) in two games to help the Medicine Hat Tigers go 1-1-0-0 on opening weekend.
On Saturday, September 24 against the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Butcher had an impressive six-point outing, tallying one goal and five assists (1G-5A) while earning first star honours in the Tigers 9-3 victory. The night prior, Butcher earned one assist (1A) in the Tigers 4-2 loss to the Hurricanes.
The 20-year-old product of Kamloops, BC, currently leads the WHL in scoring with seven points (1G-6A). The undrafted Butcher is in his fifth WHL campaign with Medicine Hat and has collected 163 points (56G-107A) in 235 career WHL regular season contests.
BRONCOS’ CHILD NAMED
WHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
The Western Hockey League announced today that Swift Current Broncos goaltender Travis Child has been named the WHL Goaltender of the Week and the league nominee for Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending September 25.
Child, a 19-year-old native of Killam, AB, was the only WHL goaltender to record a shutout on opening weekend. The third-year WHL netminder made 28 saves in his lone appearance, backstopping the Broncos to a 6-0 victory over the Saskatoon Blades on Sunday, September 25. He was named the third star of the game for his efforts.
Child’s performance helped the Broncos go 1-1-0-0, earning a home-and-home split with the Blades.
After opening weekend, Child leads all WHL goaltenders with a 0.00 goals-against average, 1.000 save percentage and one shutout.
In 52 career WHL regular season games, Child has a record of 11-20-2-1 with a 3.22 goals-against average, .903 save percentage and one shutout.
