Tale of the Weekend
The UVic Vikes men’s and women’s cross country team will kick off their season with a road trip down to Salem, Oregon for the Charles Bowles Invitational. The race will take place on Saturday October 1st at 11:00am for the men and 11:50am for the women.
This will be the first opportunity for the team to practice and develop some race tactics to lead into the rest of the season, as well as give the Vikes a chance to race against some NCAA schools. Different from the usual CIS routine.
The women will be running 5km and the men will be running 8km in distance.
About the Event
The 42nd Annual Charles Bowles Invitational is run at Bush Park where the Vikes will face off against a contingent of NCAA D1, D2, D3, and NAIA teams. Unattached/Club runners will be toeing the line as well. The race will be a perfect rust buster opportunity, and allow the new rookies to be exposed to a university level race with low pressure.
Last year the Vikes women finished second overall, with the contributions of Chloe Hegland who placed in the top ten. This year Hegland will be returning as one of the veterans on the team and strongest contender. The men are returning from an overall team win from the previous year, and will look to defend their title with the help of returning seniors Forrest Simpson, who won the race last year, and Shoayb Bascal.
Scouting the Course
Bush Park in Salem is a perfect course for a season opener. It is relatively flat, will help for some pretty quick times, and includes some mixed terrain. It will serve as a good introduction race, leading into the Western Washington Classic the following weekend which will be held in Bellingham, WA.
Brent Fougner, Vikes head coach
“We’re going into it with no real expectations for our first race of the season. Most importantly we want to see where everyone’s fitness is, and have a look at the twelve new faces on the team. Getting the team away on a trip for a couple of days will continue to build team spirit and we hope to take away lots of positives to lead into the rest of the season.”
Shoayb Bascal, Fifth Year
“The team is looking great and I’m really excited to see how the younger guys do in their first race as Vikes. Chet Goerzen and Kieran L’Abbe have been looking great in workouts and are really fit!”
