After a four-game winning streak to open the season, the Grizzlies had gone winless in their last three, posting their first loss of the season against division rival Cowichan Valley Capitals, and then coming up with a tie and a double overtime loss during the Bauer BCHL Showcase last weekend. Heading into last night’s battle the Grizzlies were looking to get back to their winning ways against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.
Grizzlies got their win, with a gutsy road effort against the Bulldogs. A game that saw the Grizzlies having to kill 11 penalties to earn a difficult 6-3 victory in the unfriendly confines of the Weyhauser Arena in Port Alberni.
Cole Pickup continued his torrid scoring pace with a goal and a helper; and as expected is drawing plenty of attention from NCAA scouts as he sits at the top of the BCHL in scoring with 14 points.
Cody Van Lierop and Jake Stevens were once again an impressive tandem on the blueline, helping lead their team, who currenlty sit first overall in the BCHL standings.
Rookies Cory Hatcher and Jamie Rome notched their second goals of the season, and for both of them- goals in back to back games; as the Grizzlies continue to get scoring from their depth players.
The Grizzlies will continue their tough schedule of 5 games in 8 days as they face the 2015 BCHL Fred Page Cup (BCHL) Champions- Coquitlam Express. The Grizz will look to shut down scoring ace Owen Stout. Following their Fridayhome match, the Grizzlies will depart at 6 am Saturday for another Divisional match up vs the surging Powell River Paper Kings.
Notes: Injured 20 yr. olds Brett Stirling and Nick Guiney are still on the shelf and both will not be in the lineup for Friday’s tilt.
Watch for special guests Grizzlies and Salsa alumni and our band of the night, Mud Man Blues! Games2u Victoria will bring some fun for the ice in between periods!
Puck drop is at 7:00pm.
