Tale of the Weekend

VICTORIA—The Vikes will take to the field on Saturday October 1, in an away game against the Castaway Wanderers. The game is scheduled to start at 2:45pm. With lots of Vikes alumni on the Wanderers, as well as current Rugby Canada players on both sides, a great match is to be expected.

When these teams met last season the stakes were about as high as they can get. In the Barnard Cup final, the Vikes defeated the Wanderers 24-5 to claim the title of the best rugby team on Vancouver Island.

Last Time Out

The Vikes are coming off of a definitive win against Westshore, which improved their season record to one win and one loss. The coaches were pleased with the energy from the team and are optimistic about what’s to come.

The Vikes have momentum on their side after their victory against Westshore this past weekend. The team is led by a strong contingent of veterans who will help keep the ball rolling

Castaway meanwhile, is coming off of a loss to James Bay. They fell 38-26 away from home last weekend.

By the Numbers

7: Number of consecutive Barnard Cup Series victories for the Vikes over Castaway

5: The number of tries scored by Isaac Kaay last weekend against Westshore
Coach‘s Take
Doug Tate, Vikes Head Coach

“It’s going to be a great matchup, both teams have lots of speed and it’s nice to see some of the best players in the league being able to play [Rugby Canada isn’t currently training so the players have an opportunity to focus on club for the time being]. We have to be consistent against the better teams and not making those unforced errors. We have lots of firepower, we just have to put it together on the day.”

“For players to watch, Isaac Kaay is coming off of an amazing game where he heavily contributed to our score. Quite a unique event and pretty incredible,” said Doug Tate, Vikes head coach. “Also having Lucas Hammond adds valuable experience, he fits in well with our team.”
