Tale of the Weekend

VICTORIA—The UVic Vikes women’s rugby team will face another tough test this weekend as they prepare to host the CIS national championship in early November.

The Vikes will host the University of Alberta Pandas, September 30 at Wallace Field. The game will get underway at 5:00 p.m.

The last time the Vikes played the Pandas it was in the Canada West playoffs last season.

On that day the third-seeded Vikes upset the second-seeded Pandas 26-20. The win paved the way for the Vikes playoff run that took them all the way to the CIS championship.

Last Time Out

The Vikes dropped their last game 29-20 to the Calgary Dinos. The Vikes came out strong in that game and had a lead at halftime, but a strong Dinos attack was able to give the Dinos the victory in a tight contest.

The Pandas were also in a close game last weekend, only they came out with the win. Four tries in the final two minutes of the game led the Pandas to a 39-33 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in their season opener.
By The Numbers

11: The number of Canada West titles that the Pandas have won in their storied history.

6: The number of Pandas who scored a try in their win over Lethbridge.

0: The difference in points scored between the Vikes and Pandas over the two games they played against each other last year.

Coach’s Take
Brittany Waters, Vikes head coach

You can learn a lot from a loss and it has provided us with key areas to improve on for our next game. We are putting in the hard work this week to get better and put in a strong performance versus UofA. We also had some great moments in the UofC game and will continue to build off that.”

“They traditionally have a strong pack and dominant ball runners. They play a physical game and we will need to attack them behind the gain line on defence and take them down before they build up momentum. On attack we will need to execute in the set piece and move them around the field, attacking the space.”
