Grizzlies On Top After Solid September

The Victoria Grizzlies started last season with four straight losses. This year, they turned those results upside down with four straight wins. Thanks to a strong contingent of veteran leaders, the Grizzlies sprinted out of the gate and to the top of the Island Division standings. They’ve since cooled down a bit, posting a 1-1-1-1 record over their last five games including a 6-3 drubbing of Island Division rivals Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The Grizz put on a special teams clinic, scoring on their only full powerplay and killing nine of 11 penalties.

Forward Cole Pickup has been outstanding so far, contributing a goal and an assist against the Bulldogs to lift his league-leading point total to 14 (6G, 8A). Other standout players are Nathan Looysen (4G,6A) and Tyler Welsh (3G, 6A). Goalie Matthew Galajda has been great between the pipes, posting a 3-1-0-1 record and a stellar 1.93 GAA. Mitchell Benson has been solid, too, winning twice in three starts with a save percentage of .908.
