VICTORIA—The Vikes men’s and women’s cross-country teams hit the ground running in Salem Oregon for their first event of the season, the Charles Bowles Invitational.

“I was extremely happy with the way everyone ran. I think everyone knows exactly what they want to improve on for the next race,” said Vikes head coach Brent Fougner. “It really set us up well for the season.”

The Vikes men finished second of the 21 teams in their division. They were led by fifth-year Cole Peterson, who finished sixth overall.

The Vikes women also had a strong showing, finishing fourth out of the 17 teams in their division. Chloe Hegland was the top finisher for the Vikes, coming across the finish line in tenth.

Hegland and Rachel Francois both finished within 30 seconds of the runner who finished in first place.

The event was a chance for the veterans of the Vikes to shake off the rust and gauge their fitness. For the rookies on the team, it was a first chance to impress their new coach.

“I was very impressed with our rookies, they established themselves as members of this team,” said Fougner.

The top rookie for the Vikes was Chet Goerzon from Kelowna, B.C. Goerzon finished 18th in the race and was the second top finisher on the men’s team.

The veterans on the team did everything they could to help the newcomers flourish according to Fougner.

“Our veterans, led by Cole PetersonChloe HeglandCody Therrien and Rachel Francois provided great leadership in executing our race plan.”

The Vikes will be back in action next weekend, October 8-9. They will cross the border again to compete in the Western Washington Classic.
