Tale Of The Weekend

VICTORIA—The Vikes men’s soccer team will face a familiar foe in a pair of match-ups this week. UVic will first travel to Vancouver to play the UBC Thunderbirds, October 6 at 5:45 p.m. Those same two teams will turn around and do battle again in Victoria on October 8 at 2:15 p.m.

The back-to-back games will be the first that the teams play against each other this season.

The last time these teams met was in the Canada West Final last season. UBC won that contest with a goal in extra time.

“It is a friendly rivalry, we go back a long way. They have a good program there, they have a lot of kids to pick from,” said Bruce Wilson, Vikes head coach. “UBC are definitely a perennial power, not only in our league but in the country.”

Last Time Out

The two teams saw their seasons take turns in different directions last weekend.

For the Vikes it was a tough weekend.  They lost to both the Trinity Western Spartans and the Fraser Valley Cascades.

The Spartans, the number four-ranked team in the nation, beat the Vikes 2-1 with the lone UVic goal coming off the foot of Michael Baart.

The Vikes didn’t fare any better in their second game of the weekend, they were shutout 3-0 by the Fraser Valley Cascades.

The Thunderbirds meanwhile, picked up a win and a tie last weekend to move themselves up to second place in the Pacific Division of Canada West soccer.

UBC beat Fraser Valley 3-0 and then tied Trinity Western 1-1.

By The Numbers

7: The number of goals UBC has allowed so far this season, the least of any teams in Canada West.
0: The number of games UBC has lost at home so far this year.
7: The number of points Paulo Dait has recorded for the Vikes, five more than any other Vike.

Coach’s Take
Bruce Wilson, Vikes head coach

“We still have six games left, in every game that we have played we’ve never really been out of it. Overall the commitment of the players has been top notch, I’ve had no complaints about that all year. There have been a lot of opportunities for the young players to play and see what the league is like.”
