TORONTO – Playing on the court where the Spartans women’s volleyball team won the national championship in 2015, Trinity Western rallied from a set down to beat Toronto 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-18) Thursday afternoon at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

In a rematch of last year’s CIS championship game, which Toronto won, the Spartans fell behind early but, on the strength of Elly Wendel’s (Caronport, Sask.) 15 kills and Katie Devaney’s (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) 14 kills, TWU rallied to win.

“It was a unique experience being in Toronto’s gym again,” said Spartans coach Ryan Hofer. “There are a lot of fond memories and amazing times that we had in that gym when we won the national championship there. It was also a little bit bittersweet seeing the (CIS) banner from last year, but we were there to play great volleyball and Toronto did a great job of hosting us.

“It was a great volleyball game and a good matchup. They forced us to play well and they put a lot of pressure on us with their attack in the first game. They made sure that we had to adjust our block and we had to find ways to slow them down and find ways to score.”

The win capped a perfect preseason trip to Ontario in which TWU went 5-0 and only lost one set.

TWU will now prepare for the West Coast Classic Oct. 14-16.
