BELLINGHAM, Washington – Joel De Schiffart (Nanaimo, B.C.) finished second and Declan White (South Surrey, B.C.) was third, as the Spartans leading duo helped Trinity Western to a team victory at the Western Washington Classic Saturday at Lake Padden.
TWU had all five of its scoring athletes finish in the top 14 as the Spartans easily beat all comers, including the likes of University of Alaska Anchorage (NCAA Div. II), Simon Fraser, Victoria, Western Washington and UBC. The Spartans top five runners all finished within 48 seconds of each other.
Running in a torrential downpour, De Schiffart took second place over the 10 kilometre course in 31:17.3, while White was third in 31:24.6. Caleb de Jong (Winnipeg) was seventh in 31:42.7, Nick Colyn (Langley, B.C.) was 13th in 31:59.1 and Levi Neufeld (Winnipeg) was 14th in 32:04.7.
Despite the rainy and windy conditions, De Schiffart shaved nearly 45 seconds off his time from last year at the same race, when he finished in 32:01.
The Spartans will now prepare for the BC Championships Oct. 29 in Nanaimo, B.C. The CIS national championships, which also act as the Canada West championships, are Nov. 12 in Quebec City.
