Western Washington Invitation ends with Vikes in 13th

VICTORIA—The Vikes women’s golf team has finished up a challenging two days of play at the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham Washington.

UVic finished the tournament in 13th place, their five golfers combined to shoot 661 in the tournament.

Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia and Northeastern State University finished the tournament first, second and third respectively.

It was the youth of the team that led the way for the Vikes.

Second-years Melanie Murchison and Nicole Gargarella were the top Vikes finishers. Murchison shot two rounds of 81 to finish tied for 38th place. Gargarella improved five shots from her opening round 85 to shoot an 80 on the second day, good enough to land her in a tie for 52nd.

Hannah Diamond and Laura Ferreira each shot 170 in their two rounds combined to finish in a tie for 63rd. Quinn Fitzgerald was just one shot back of Diamond and Ferreira, her score of 171 saw her finish in 66th.

The Vikes will have the advantage of all the comforts of home the next time they are in action. They will host the Vikes Shootout, October 16-18 at the Cordova Bay golf course in Victoria.
