(Vancouver) Following a highlight reel performance last Saturday in which he hauled in nine catches for 208 yards, BC Lions receiver Bryan Burnham has taken home CFL Player of the Week honours as announced by the league this morning.
The lofty numbers came in a heart-stopping battle in Winnipeg and featured the Lions erasing an early 21-point deficit before coming up just short in the 37-35 loss to the Blue Bombers.
“It was like a boxing match. They threw their punches, then it was our turn to counter and we did. We dug ourselves out of hole, but unfortunately we just couldn’t finish,” Burnham said of the back-and-forth affair.
The 208-yard outing marked the first time since 2007 that a Lions receiver has hit the 200-yard plateau (Geroy Simon, 211 vs Calgary) and it’s also the second highest single-game receiving total in the league this year. The numbers keep piling up for the talented third-year pass grabber as Burnham has now eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career.
“I’m not going to lie, it feels good personally, but at the end of the day we have one job and that is to win.”
The Lions will have a chance to do just that on Friday night at BC Place as Burnham and fellow 1000-yard receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux along with sophomore quarterback sensation Jonathon Jennings look to avenge their loss to the Bombers while solidifying their hold on second place in the West Division.
Friday night’s game against Winnipeg is presented by Purolator Tackle Hunger. Fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation to the game in support of the Greater Vancouver Foodbank and the Surrey Foodbank
