Rugby player Miranda Seifert from Queen’s University and soccer player Chris Rushworth from the University of Lethbridge are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending October 9, 2016.
Seifert scored five tries as the Gaels defeated the York Lions 55-5 in the regular season finale against their division rival. The fifth-year geography major and Regina, Saskatchewan native scored the first two tries of the game and added a third just before the end of the half. She added another two tries in the second half, almost single-handedly sending the Gaels into the playoffs with the home-field advantage for the quarter-finals.
Hockey player Cassandra Vilgrain of UBC, swimmer Katerine Savard of Montreal, and cross country runner Colleen Wilson of Dalhousie were also nominated for the women’s award.
Rushworth recorded three goals over a pair of wins over the Saskatchewan Huskies. He scored the insurance goal on six shots in Lethbridge’s 2-0 win on October 8 and then netted both Pronghorn tallies in their crucial 2-1 win the following day. Rushworth now leads the Pronghorns in scoring with five goals on the season.
