Napa, Calif. – The PGA TOUR announced today that Emiliano Grillo has been named the 2016 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year as voted on by the TOUR’s membership for the 2015-16 season. The presentation was made by PGA TOUR Deputy Commissioner Jay Monahan at the Safeway Open at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California, where Grillo is preparing to defend his maiden PGA TOUR title.
PGA TOUR members who played in at least 15 official money events this past season were eligible to vote. The balloting process ended on October 7.
“Congratulations to Emiliano Grillo on being awarded PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year by his fellow members,” said Monahan. “For him to win his first start as a member and to go on to qualify for the TOUR Championship is truly an amazing rookie season. With young stars like Emiliano and others playing and winning earlier than ever before, the PGA TOUR is in tremendous hands for years to come.”
Grillo, now 24, is the third member of the famed high school class of 2011 to earn PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year honors, joining Jordan Spieth (2013) and Daniel Berger (2015). He is the second Argentinian to be named PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year along with Andres Romero (2008).
Grillo defeated Kevin Na in a playoff at the 2015 Safeway Open, becoming the first player to win in his first start as an official PGA TOUR member since Russell Henley at the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii. He totaled two additional top-10 finishes the rest of the season, including a tie for second at The Barclays and a tie for 10th at the season-ending TOUR Championship during the FedExCup Playoffs. He became just the ninth rookie to qualify for the TOUR Championship since the inception of the FedExCup in 2007. He also finished tied for eighth at the Men’s Olympic Golf Competition in Rio.
A 2015 graduate of the Web.com Tour, Grillo was selected as PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year over Smylie Kaufman, winner of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and Si Woo Kim, winner of the Wyndham Championship.
Grillo joins Dustin Johnson, who was named PGA TOUR Player of the Year on Monday, as the PGA TOUR’s season-ending award winners.
