Calgary, AB—The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s volleyball team dropped their opening match at the Dino Cup exhibition tournament at the University of Calgary.
The Pack lost to the host Dinos 3-1.
The scores were 25-15,25-17, 23-25,25-21.
“We seemed to be fighting ourselves all match,” said WolfPack interim head coach Mike Hawkins. “The last two sets we played much better and much more to our style/personality, but we kept giving away too many points off errors. Calgary played well enough to capitalize on our mistakes but we didn’t test them well enough consistently throughout the match.”
The WolfPack were led by Daniel Eikland Rod (5th year, outside hitter, Oz, Norway) who had 11 kills in 25 swings with a service ace and three digs.
Jordan Foot (4th year, middle, Prince George, BC) had six kills in 14 chances with two digs, a solo block and two block assists.
Kyle Behiels (2nd year, middle, Edmonton, AB) had six kills in eight chances with one block assist. “Kyle played well in the two sets he got into,” added Hawkins. “He had one stuff block and put a lot of pressure on the Dinos from the service line.”
Randy Grundmann (4th year, outside hitter, Winnipeg, MB) added five kills in 21 chances with six digs.
Tyler Pomietlarz (3rd year, setter, Kelowna, BC) had 10 assists and five digs to go with a block assist.
Calgary was led by Curtis Stockton with 14 kills in 31 chances and 10 digs. Keith West added 11 kills in 25 opportunities and four digs along with two service aces. Alex Bader had 10 kills in 16 swings with five digs. Alex Cook had 36 assists.
TRU continues their tournament tonight with a match against the Queen’s University Golden Gaels. That match will be played at 5 pm MDT. They wrap things up on Saturday (Oct 15) against the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
The Bears are the same team that TRU will open the 2016-17 Canada West season with on Friday, October 28th on the Warner Rentals court at the Tournament Capital Centre. Game time will be 7:45 pm.
