SAANICH, B.C. – Nick Guerra scored twice, including the game winner at 1:06 of double overtime, to lift the Saanich Braves to a 6-5 win over the Victoria Cougars on Friday night.

It was a seesaw battle between these two heavyweights.

The Cougars built up a 3-1 lead on Wyatt Elmer’s second goal of the game at the 55 second mark of the second period.

But Brandon Fushimi, who has given Saanich an offensive boost after rejoining the team earlier this month, scored a pair of unanswered goals later in the period to tie the game.

With the win, the South Island Division leading Braves (9-5-0-0) now leads Victoria (7-3-0-2) by two points.

Gavin Grewal and Dale McCabe also scored for Saanich who snapped a two game losing skid.

Scoring for the Cougars were Tyler Vanuden and Grayden Hohl with a pair.

Victoria went 1-for-6 on the power play while the Braves finished 0-for-3.

Riley Mathieson made 27 saves for the win in net.  Anthony Ciurro turned away 26 shots for the Cougars.

Elsewhere in the VIJHL, Carter Hikichi potted a pair of goals to lead the Campbell River Storm to a 3-1 win over the visiting Kerry Park Islanders.

And in North Saanich, the game between the Peninsula Panthers and Westshore Wolves was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

Next game for Victoria is Saturday, October 15 versus the Oceanside Generals.  Game time at Oceanside Place, located at 830 Island Highway West, is 7:30 p.m.
