Caleb Jones scored in a shootout as the Portland Winterhawks (8-3-0-0) earned a 3-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs (2-4-1-1) as the Winterhawks wrapped up an eight-game road trip in Spokane.
Neither of the two teams found the back of the net in the first two rounds of the shootout, setting up the final round. When Spokane missed their opportunity in the third round of the shootout, Caleb Jones deked Spokane’s goaltender Dawson Weatherill and slid the puck five hole to seal the victory.
Spokane’s Koby Morrisseau opened the scoring at 17:44 for a 1-0 the Chiefs took into the second.
Portland tied it 5:21 into the second when Ryan Hughes scored the lone goal of the period, roofing the puck over the shoulder of Weatherill to make it 1-1 going into the third.
It remained tied until the 7:25 mark of the third when Spokane’s Curtis Miske scored to put the Chiefs up 2-1. Then, with 3:05 remaining, Cody Glass banged in a rebound to even the score again at 2-2 and set up overtime.
After neither team found the net in overtime, the game went to a shootout, which Jones finished in the third round to give Portland the victory.
The Hawks will now return to Portland, taking the ice again Tuesday when they host the Tri-City Americans at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
