Tale of the Weekend

VICTORIA—The Vikes women’s soccer team will head out on their longest road trip of the Canada West season when they travel to Manitoba to play the University of Winnipeg Wesmen and the University of Manitoba Bison on October 22 and 23.

Both games will start at 9:00 a.m.

While the Vikes are already guaranteed a spot in the Canada West playoffs they are still locked in a battle with UBC for fourth place in the Pacific Division. The team that finishes fourth won’t host a playoff game but will have an easier road to the Canada West championship tournament.

The last time UVic played either of these teams was three years ago. On that occasion the Vikes won both games in Manitoba, beating the Bison 1-0 and the Wesmen 4-0.

Last Time Out

The Vikes were in tough in the two games they played last weekend. They lost to the No. 2 ranked Trinity Western Spartans 2-0 and the No. 9 ranked Fraser Valley Cascades 2-1. Rachel Baird scored the lone Vikes goal on the weekend.

Winnipeg split their slate of games last weekend. The Wesmen fell to the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1, before rebounding to beat the University of Regina 1-0.

Manitoba came away from the weekend with just one point. The Bison lost to Regina and tied Saskatchewan.

By the Numbers

4: The Bison and Wesmen are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Prairie Division.

11: Despite being tied on points the Wesmen have allowed 11 more goals than the Bison this season.

Coach’s Take
Tracy David, Vikes head coach

“Let’s hope there’s no snow in Manitoba when we go there. It’s somebody different from the teams that we are used to playing so it’ll be nice, but that’s problematic too. We haven’t played them in three years so we are going to have to do some work in terms of watching video to figure out where their strengths may lie.
