VICTORIA—The Vikes women’s basketball team will get their lone chance to see how they perform on the road before the start of the regular season when they travel to Toronto to take part in the Ryerson tournament from October 21-23.
The Vikes will play three games in the tournament with their first one coming at 3:00 p.m. against the host Rams. The Vikes results throughout the tournament will determine when and against who their other games are.
Joining the Vikes in Toronto will be the McMaster Marauders, Windsor Lancers, Western Mustangs, UBC Thunderbrids, Saskatchewan Huskies and the Cape Breton Capers.
The Vikes will have a tough opening game of the tournament. The host Rams not only have the advantage of playing on their home court but also made it to the national final last season where they lost to the Saskatchewan Huskies.
“It’s always a very good tournament. Ryerson who we get right off the bat was in the national final last year, they’re probably the biggest team in the country so that’ll be a great game,” said Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair.
The Vikes have now won three pre-season games in a row.
Ryerson is also coming into the tournament off of a win. The Rams defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 72-51 in Toronto.
The Rams are 4-3 in their pre-season so far.
8: Every single team in the tournament made it into their respective conference playoffs last season.
25: The number of points Giannattasio scored in the Vikes last pre-season game.
Dani Sinclair, Vikes head coach
“In order to be a great team you need to be able to play well on the road. It’s an important trip for us on many levels. Learning how to deal with travel, because we have been pampered a little bit playing at home.”
“It’s great to play at home but great teams have toughness and toughness is built on the road.”
“We are going to be coming up against a pretty stacked group of teams in this tournament.”
