The VISL Game of the Week between Gorge FC & Bays Utd of Division 1 was a battle right to the end.
A stormy wet night at Hampton Park had teams placed 1st & 2nd faceoff and Bays Utd took back 1st place with a 2-1 win over Gorge FC.
Gorge was previously undefeated; something Bays knew all too well as they were defeated last week by Nanaimo to suffer their first loss.
Both teams were missing a couple of their starters due to injury or suspension – other personnel seemed to fill in admirably.
Bays Utd opened the scoring early – 5 minutes into the game. Mike Moon was fouled in the box, he then stepped up and slotted his PK. 1-0 early for the green team from Oak Bay. Gorge (who wore their alternate red jerseys) rebounded and played well for the remainder of the half. Both teams had their share of chances. Bays had several extra chances via corner kicks, but did not capitalize on any of those occasions. Both Keepers were tested and busy. Elliot Mitrou of Bays & Iain Walker of Gorge were up to the task. Following a Gorge corner kick and eventual clearance later in the 1st half, Jon Shaw was able to collect the ball inside the 18 and equalize for Gorge.
1-1 heading into Halftime.
After the break, Gorge created some chances and looked to go ahead on 2 different occasions – not to be. Dominic Colantonio & Jon Shaw had strong 2nd halves, nothing further to show for their efforts. Bays looked very dangerous in the midfield, particularly Alex Redpath & Mike Moon.
As the 2nd half progressed, it looked like a draw was in the cards, but that changed at minute 80. It started a few minutes earlier as Coach Rich Fast subbed in Wesley Barrett for Bays. He was an instant spark plug that provided the finishing touch on a very nice goal. It should be noted that on this play in particular, Bays player Jacob Simpson did a lot of the work on the outside of the midfield and delivered exceptional service into the box. Wes Barrett was able to flick the ball into the net and that gave Bays the lead with 10 minutes left to play.
Gorge did try to equalize in the next 10, but Bays did keep the ball well when needed, and found the corner flag on more than one occasion.
A good display of the top flight soccer in Division 1 – even with the tough conditions to play in.
The 1550’s game MVP was Mike Moon from Bays Utd. Besides drawing fouls and scoring a goal via PK, Mike worked hard all game dropping deep to get the ball at times – still pressing forward and creating lots of offensive chances. A treat to watch. Mike received a gift certificate for lunch at 1550’s as well as some fun promotional products from Heineken / Molsons.
