Seattle Thunderbirds goalie Rylan Toth made 32 saves Friday night at the ShoWare Center to lead the T-Birds to a 3-1 win over the Portland Winterhawks on Pink The Rink Night.
Toth stopped12 shots in the third period including several in the final minutes as the Winterhawks were pressing for a tying goal.
The T-Birds wore special pink themed jerseys that were auctioned off during the game with the proceeds going to Valley Guys and Girls.
The T-Birds took a 1-0 lead at 16:06 of the first period. The T-Birds were pressuring the Winterhawks for over a minute in the offensive zone. Portland goalie Cole Kehler tried to play the puck to his right but the puck squirted to Nolan Volcan between the circles. Volcan took a slap shot at an open net. The puck appeared to hit the net behind the crossbar and then came right back on the ice with play continuing. After about 40 seconds the horn sounded, play was stopped and the shot went to video review. After video review the officials determined the puck went into the net. Donovan Neuls and Scott Eansor had the assists on the goal.
Seattle extended the lead to 2-0 at 18:34 of the first on a power-play goal from Ethan Bear. Eansor won a faceoff in the left circle back to Jarret Tyszka at the left point. Tyszka’s pass across the ice hit the boards and came right to Bear who took a slap shot. Bear’s shot beat Kehler over the blocker for his first goal of year.
Seattle outshot Portland 12-10 in the first period.
Portland cut the T-Birds lead to one goal at 3:45 of the second period on a power-play from Skyler McKenzie. Joachim Blichfeld and Caleb Jones had the assists.
Both teams had 11 shots on goal in the second period. The T-Birds led 23-21 in shots after two periods.
The Winterhawks pulled Kehler with 1:40 left in the game to try and get the tying goal. Defenseman Reece Harsch poked the puck out of Toth’s crease on a scramble. Sami Moilanen got the puck in the right circle and chipped it up the right wall. Matthew Wedman outraced two Portland defensemen to get to the puck. Wedman backhanded the puck from the blue line into the empty net with one minute left in the game.
Portland finished the game with a 33-28 advantage in shots.
Kehler ended the game with 25 saves on 27 shots.
The T-Birds take on the Kelowna Rockets Saturday at 7:05pm at ShoWare Center.
