Vancouver, B.C. – The Vancouver Giants dropped a 5-4 decision to the Tri-City Americans on Sunday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre. Radovan Bondra, Tyler Benson, James Malm and Johnny Wesley had Vancouver’s goals.
Bondra put the Giants on the board after a strong start for Vancouver when he fought off a check behind the Tri-City goal and cut out front before beating Americans goalie Beck Warm with a shot from in tight. AuCoin evened the score with an unassisted marker just over two minutes later.
Benson put Vancouver ahead again 23 seconds into the second period, firing a wrist shot into the top right corner from the left wing. The Americans went on to score four unanswered goals in the middle frame. Carson Focht netted his first WHL goal to tie the game before Parker Wotherspoon and Dylan Coghlan bagged power play goals just over three minutes apart. Kyle Olson potted his third of the year to give the visitors a 5-2 lead through 40 minutes. Vancouver goaltender Ryan Kubic was pulled after conceding five goals on 19 shots.
The Giants got two goals in the third period to cut into the Americans’ lead. Malm chipped his third of the season past Warm on a power play at 11:19 before Wesley scored with a shot off the rush at 14:12 to make it 5-4. The G-Men pulled the goalie in the late stages and forced Warm into a couple of difficult saves, but the Tri-City goaltender held the fort to preserve the win for his team.
The Giants went 1-for-4 on the power play and out shot Tri-City 40-28 in the loss.
Vancouver returns to action on Friday against the Kamloops Blazers at the Sandman Centre. Puck drop is slated for 7:00pm.
The G-Men will face the Blazers on home ice on Saturday.
