Vancouver, B.C. – Ty Ronning scored at 2:31 of overtime to lift the Vancouver Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre. The Giants have now won five of their last six games. Matt Barberis had the other goal for the G-Men.
Lane Pederson opened the scoring for the Broncos on a power play at 11:49 of the first period, capitalizing on a beautiful cross-crease pass from Tyler Steenbergen to beat Vancouver goalie Ryan Kubic from the left circle. Barberis tied the game for the G-Men with a shot from the left wing on a man advantage with just three seconds left in the frame. It was his first goal of the year in his first game back in the lineup after being hurt in the opening game of the season.
Kubic made a number of important saves throughout the rest of the game. He robbed Glenn Gawdin on a chance at the right post after a nice pass from Aleksi Heponiemi from behind the net in the second period. The Giants’ goalie came up big again in the third period when Kade Jensen hit the post with a shot from the point, and Kubic fell on the loose puck as it sat behind him in the crease.
Ronning chipped home the winning goal in overtime, shooting on a 2-on-1 before following through to score on his own rebound.
Kubic stopped 28 of 29 Swift Current shots. Vancouver outshot the Broncos 37-29. The G-Men were 1-for-4 on the power play.
The Giants will get right back at it on Sunday afternoon when they host the Tri-City Americans at the LEC. Face-off is set for 4:00pm.
