LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western’s men’s and women’s soccer teams will both host a Canada West playoff game this Saturday, while the men’s hockey team is at home Friday, the volleyball teams open their regular season schedule on the road, the cross country teams compete in the BC championships and the basketball teams round out their preseason schedule.

STORYLINE

After completing their first ever undefeated regular season, the Spartans embark on the post-season with their eyes set on earning a place in the national championship game for the fifth straight year. A win over UBCO this weekend would put TWU into the Canada West Final Six, which the Spartans would host the following weekend at Chase Office Field. In their only meeting this year, TWU beat the Heat 3-0 on the road.

Saturday’s game against Mount Royal will see the Spartans host a Canada West playoff game for the first time since 2007. In their only meeting with the Cougars this year, the teams played to a 1-1 tie at Chase Office Field. The winner advances to the Canada West Final Four.

Coming off a U Sports (formerly CIS) silver-medal winning season, the Spartans open the 2016-17 season ranked No. 1 in the country. With a strong returning contingent, TWU is a team built to make a run at a national title. This week, the Spartans start their Canada West campaign with a two-game series in Regina. TWU comes into the weekend ranked first in the Canada West preseason poll, while Regina is ranked last.

STORYLINE

The Spartans will begin their national championship defence this weekend in Regina. After winning the Canada West and U Sports (formerly CIS) championships last year, the Spartans started this year with a tidy 13-3 preseason record. On paper, this weekend’s game is a mismatch as it features a TWU team that is ranked second in the Canada West preseason poll against a Cougars side that is ranked last.

The Spartans play their third straight home game as they host first-place Victoria Friday. A win would vault TWU past the Vikes into top spot in the BCIHL standings. These two teams split their opening-weekend two-game series in Victoria.

STORYLINE

The Spartans will compete in the BC provincial championships this year, with qualifying spots on the line for the Canadian championships in late November. This weekend’s race will also serve as a final preparatory event for the CIS national championships Nov. 12 in Quebec City. Last year, amongst current Spartans, Declan White finished second on the men’s side, while Lisa Brooking was sixth on the women’s side.
