SASKATOON – University of Regina Cougars goaltender Jane Kish kept the University of Saskatchewan Huskies off the score sheet Friday night at Rutherford Rink, leading the Cougars to a 2-0 win.
Kish would save 21 shots, holding on for a shutout while Huskie goalie Cassidy Hendrick saved 11 shots. The Regina Cougars add another win to their record, improving to 4-3-0-0 while giving the Huskies (5-2) just their second loss of the season.
Danielle Nogier opened the scoring on the power play for the Regina early in the first at 1:13 with assists from Alexis Larson and Bailey Braden. The Cougars widened their lead at 6:04, when Jaycee Magwood put home a shot off of a rebound with Larson earning her second assist in a Cougar rush on the net.
After struggling in the first, the Huskies would surge into action in the second, leading in shots 13-7. However, Kish remained unperturbed, leaving the period scoreless.
The third period would go scoreless, dominated by power plays, a total of 14, with both teams surviving 5 on 3 situations. Despite pulling their goalie for a sixth skater, the Huskies could not solve Kish.
The Huskies head to the Co-operators Centre for the second game of the series in Regina on Saturday at 7 P.M.
