LA GRANDE, Oregon – The Trinity Western Spartans men’s basketball team lost to the College of Idaho Yotes 75-53 in preseason action Friday afternoon at Quinn Coliseum in La Grande, Oregon
Third year guard Vartan Tanielian (Surrey, B.C.) with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and four assists and fourth year guard Pogos Trunyan (Sacramento, Calf.) with 10 points led the Spartans attack, while Aziz Leeks with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Dominique Jordan with 15 points, and Roosevelt Adams with 12 points and 9 rebounds led the Yotes.
TWU had early 3-0 and 5-3 – leads, but Idaho was to go on an 18-6 run to take a 21-11 lead. The Spartans hung around, closing the half on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 35-29 – but could not get closer.
The Spartans cut the gap to 53-43 on a Tanielian jumper with just under 10 minutes remaining. C of I answered with 10-straight points as they rolled on to the 22 point win.
Trinity Western finished the afternoon shooting 35.7 percent (20-56) from the field, 47.1 percent (8-17) from the foul line and 29.4 percent (5-17) from the three point line. Idaho finished at 40 percent (28-70) from the field, 50 percent (8-16) from foul line, and 30.6 percent (11-36) from three point line.
The Spartans will finish their preseason tomorrow against the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers. Game time is set for 3:30 PDT in La Grande, Oregon.
TWU opens Canada West play Friday–Saturday, November 4-5 when they travel to Kelowna, B.C. to play the UBC Okanagan Heat. The Spartans home opener is on November 12 against the Fraser Valley Cascades.
