VICTORIA—In just his first race of the season, fifth-year Vike Shoayb Bascal was the top finisher in what was a solid outing from the Vikes men’s and women’s cross country teams at the B.C. Provincial Championships on October 29.

Racing against the top club and university athletes in the province, Bascal finished in fourth place and was just four seconds behind the second place finisher. Chloe Hegland led the way for the Vikes women, finishing in 11th place. Hegland, in her third-year with the Vikes, was five seconds away from a top ten finish.

Five other Vikes men finished in the top 20 at the event. Cole Peterson and Forrest Simpson crossed the line in 11th and 12th, while Ben WeirCody TherrienJonathan Toombs and Chet Goerzen placed 16th, 17th, 18th and 20th.

Gemma MoranAlyssa Mousseau and Andie Wood were the top Vikes women after Hegland. They finished 25th, 27th and 28th.

The Vikes will be hoping to carry these results forward into their next meet, the all-important CIS national championships that take place in Quebec City on November 12.

The men will be fighting to defend the CIS title that they claimed last year while the women will be hoping to build on their seventh place finish from last season.
