Tyler Steenbergen buried his third overtime winner of the season to seal a 3-2 victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen at the Credit Union i-Plex on Friday evening.

In the first period, the Calgary Hitmen opened the scoring as Carsen Twarynski redirected a Matteo Gennaro wrist shot by Broncos goaltender Travis Child for his fifth of the season.

Just 25 seconds later, Finnish import Aleksi Heponiemi took advantage of a Hitmen turnover and wired it by Cody Porter to tie the game 1-1.

Both clubs played a tight checking game that resulted in limited scoring chances but displayed plenty of hard-hitting action. After killing off a minor penalty midway through the second period, the Broncos capitalized on a power play of their own as Ottawa Senators prospect Max Lajoie completed a perfect shot to find the twine and give Swift Current a 2-1 lead. Sahvan Khaira and Calvin Spencer drew the assists on the go-ahead goal.

The Broncos were clinging to their one goal lead throughout the duration of the third period and with the Hitmen net empty in the final minute, Twarynski tapped in a rebound opportunity to tie the game 2-2 with 26 seconds remaining.

Overtime was needed for the third straight game and the Broncos closed the door with Steenbergen cutting to the middle and firing the puck by Porter to give his club the 3-2 win. The native of Sylvan Lake, AB now has three overtime winning goals this season, including two in his last three games.

“Pederson made a good drop pass to me,” said Steenbergen. “I made a quick move to the middle, put the puck on net and it went in. It doesn’t matter who scores it, as long as we get the win.”

Swift Current finished 1/4 on the power play and held Calgary scoreless on three power play opportunities. Shots on goal were 27-25 in favour of Calgary.

The Broncos hit the road for the back end of the home-and-home set with Calgary as the two teams will meet at the Saddledome on Saturday, November 5th. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm.
