Stewart, Graham and men’s rowing receive honours for October

VICTORIA— The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council is pleased to announce the winners of the athletes and team of the month awards for the month of October 2016. 

The council would like to congratulate third-year rugby player Madeleine Graham, fourth-year rugby player Crosby Stewart and the Vikes men’s rowing team on being awarded October’s athlete and team of the month awards.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Crosby Stewart, Men’s Rugby

Crosby Stewart‘s success on the field led to some recognition off it in the month of October. The fourth-year Wing from Victoria, B.C., received the first ever Phil Mack award, an honour that recognizes the top First Nations rugby player on Vancouver Island. Stewart was also one of 22 athletes named to the national seven’s team centralized roster ahead of the 2016-17 HSBC Sevens Series season. For the Vikes the dynamic Stewart scored a try in a loss to the Castaway Wanderers on October 1.


FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Madeleine GrahamWomen’s Rugby

The University of Victoria Vikes women’s rugby team had their second most successful Canada West campaign in program history, finishing second in the conference and earning a berth in the national championship tournament. Madeleine Graham, a Back 3 player from Edmonton Alberta was a big part of that success. The Sciences major was a threat to score all game long in the Vikes semifinal victory over Alberta and scored the team’s opening try on a great individual effort in their championship loss to the Calgary Dinos. Graham was named to the 2016 Canada West All-Star Team at the conclusion of the tournament.

TEAM OF THE MONTH 
Men’s Rowing

The Vikes men’s rowing had a very successful month of October, winning the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships for the second year in a row. A one-point win over their rivals from UBC cemented the Vikes position as the top men’s rowing program in Western Canada. The team took home gold medals from the event in the heavyweight single, heavyweight four and heavyweight pair. The lightweight men captured three silver medals at the event.
