Emily Lieuwen wins Provost Award as 83 athletes named to Vikes Honour Roll

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria held the 12th annual Vikes Honour Roll Luncheon on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate those student-athletes who achieved a minimum of 6.6 GPA (80%) or higher during the 2015-16 school year.

Eighty-three student-athletes made the Vikes Honour Roll in 2015-16. Third-year women’s soccer player Emily Lieuwen was recognized with the Provost Award for the highest academic average after registering an 8.8 GPA in the Faculty of Science.

Lieuwen was a big part of a Vikes squad that excelled on defensively this year, allowing just 13 goals in regular season play. The Ladner, BC, controlled the midfield and was dangerous in attack when needed, finishing third on the team in goals scored.

She was a big part of their upset victory over U Sports no. 8 ranked Fraser Valley in the playoffs, helping the Vikes to their second-straight Canada West Select Six appearance.

“Emily gives 100% when she’s on the pitch, obviously she gives 100% in her studies and she’s also a very responsible young woman,” said women’s soccer head coach Tracy David. “She takes her job seriously when she’s playing and we’re really honoured as a team to have her in our group.”

Thanks to the generous support of the University of Victoria and the apparel and on-campus partnership between Nike, T. Litzen Sports and the UVic Bookstore, the group of recipients receives $500 of financial support for their accomplishments.

The Provost Award winner receives a further $500 athletic financial award for a total of $1,000 in support. Lieuwen will be honoured again at the end of the year at the Celebration of Champions athletics award banquet in April.

All of the student-athletes from sports that compete in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (now U Sport) also received an Academic All-Canadian certificate personally signed by His Excellency, the Right Honorable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada. Each certificate is personally signed by the Governor General, and the Top Eight Us Sport Academic All Canadians were recognized in a special ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa two weeks ago.
