Kennewick, WA – Tyler Sandhu scored the shootout winner to lift the Tri-City Americans to a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Giants on Saturday night at the Toyota Center. Ty Ronning and Tyler Popowich had the Giants’ goals.
Ronning got the Giants off to a great start, scoring his ninth goal of the season just 21 seconds into the first period. Popowich extended the Vancouver lead later in the period, beating Americans goalie Rylan Parenteau with a hard wrist shot from the right circle.
The Americans scored twice in the latter half of the second period to tie the game. Tyler Sandhu extended his point streak to 12 games when he beat Vancouver goaltender Ryan Kubic from the slot before Dylan Coghlan netted a power play goal on a one-timer from the point.
Tri-City had the momentum throughout most of the third period, outshooting the Giants 15-5, but Kubic made a number of big saves, including remarkable left pad stop on Brett Leason, to force overtime and earn Vancouver a single point.
Neither team found the net in the extra five-minute period, and Tyler Benson was the lone Giant to score in the shootout while Morgan Geekie and Sandhu both found the net for the Americans.
Tri-City out shot Vancouver 38-28. The Giants went 0-for-4 on the power play.
Vancouver will now return home to host the Prince George Cougars on Tuesday, November 29, at 7:00pm.
