Nanaimo Buccaneers Show Cougars The Door

NANAIMO, B.C. – The Victoria Cougars saw their five-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday falling 5-1 to the Nanaimo Buccaneers in front of 210 at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Chad Bell and Cole Broadhurst broke open a tight game with second period goals.

The two teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Danny Pion, Trent Bell, and Cam Nickerson also scored for Nanaimo.

Named the game’s first star was John Hawthorne who turned aside 28 shots for his 11th win of the season.

Owen Dalman replied for Victoria whose power play went a dismal 1-for-8.

The South Island Division leading Cougars failed to distance themselves from the Saanich Braves who still sit three points back of Victoria.

Saanich does have three games in hand.

After making 32 saves in a 6-2 win over Nanaimo last Thursday, Anthony Ciurro allowed five goals on 33 shots.

It was also not a good night for Cougars head coach Suneil Karod who was celebrating a birthday on Saturday.

With the Buccaneers in shut down mode, Victoria managed only three shots on goal in the third period.

Elsewhere in the VIJHL:  Campbell River Storm 5, Comox Valley Glacier Kings 4.  Kerry Park Islanders 6, Peninsula Panthers 4.  Westshore Wolves 5, Oceanside Generals 3.

Next game for the Cougars is Thursday, December 1 versus the Westshore Wolves.  Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 7:00 p.m.
