Vancouver, B.C. – Brad Morrison scored the winning goal in overtime to lift the Prince George Cougars to a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Giants on Tuesday night at the Langley Events Centre. Ty Ronning, Matt Barberis and Radovan Bondra scored for the G-Men while Ryan Kubic made 42 saves in the loss.
Jansen Harkins opened the scoring for Prince George after the midway mark of the first period when he pounced on the rebound of a Jesse Gabrielle shot at the side of the net. Ronning tied the game for the G-Men later in the stanza, scoring on a rebound of his own to tally his 10th marker of the year. Gabrielle put the Cougars back in front in the final two minutes of the frame, beating Kubic on a hard drive to the net from off the left wing.
Vancouver got two goals in the second period to take the lead through 40 minutes. Barberis snuck a wrist shot from the point past Cougars goalie Ty Edmonds on a power play while Bondra fired the puck past Edmonds from the right circle after the goaltender had turned the puck over behind his own net.
The Giants weathered a storm of Cougar shots in the third period as Kubic made several remarkable stops, but with the goalie on the bench in the final minute, Brendan Guhle tied the game, scoring on a screened shot from the half wall to send the game to overtime.
Morrison gave the Cougars the win at 1:58 of the extra period, completing a give-and-go with Brogan O’Brien on a two-on-one.
The Cougars out shot the Giants 46-22. Vancouver went 1-for-6 on the power play.
The Giants will be back in action at the Langley Events Centre on Friday when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.
