Karan and Don Whamond
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The PGA TOUR has named Karan and Don Whamond the 2016 PGA TOUR Volunteers of the Year in recognition of their dedication to THE NORTHERN TRUST, where they have volunteered since the inception of the event 50 years ago. The couple, from Rye Brook, New York, have been the co-chairs of the Uniform Distribution committee throughout their time at the event and are the first husband and wife to be named PGA TOUR Volunteers of the Year.
The Whamonds were chosen as the 2016 Volunteers of the Year from the many thousands of volunteers who support the PGA TOUR each year. The selfless commitment of volunteers enables tournaments to generate millions of dollars for their respective charities, while at the same time providing a fun and memorable experience for fans.
“Dedicated volunteers like the Whamonds make THE NORTHERN TRUST a truly remarkable event each year,” said Peter Mele, executive director of THE NORTHERN TRUST. “For 50 years, they have shown uncommon support for our event and make it possible for us to give back to the New York and New Jersey Metropolitan communities.”
Karan and Don Whamond have been co-chairs of the Unifrom Distrbution committee since THE NORTHERN TRUST began 50 years ago. While the event has evolved through the years, Karan and Don have been a constant. Each year, as the tournament moves the next course in its rotation, they are commited to commuting and working many hours leading up to the event and through tournament week to ensure that all of the volunteers receive their uniforms and credentials. All volunteers, both returning and new, know they can count on the familiar faces of the Whamonds to make sure they are prepared for their volunteer duties.
“We are honored to be the 2016 PGA TOUR Volunteers of the year and for our local charity to receive a donation in our name,” said Karan and Don Whamond. “This is what the TOUR is all about, giving back to the communities who support the tournaments.”
In recognition of Whamonds’ service and contributions to THE NORTHERN TRUST, the PGA TOUR will donate $5,000 to the Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS, the charity of their choice.
The Whamonds initially became involved with THE NORTHERN TRUST in 1967 to support their local hospital. They continue to volunteer because of the friendships they have developed over the years with the other volunteers, from those that volunteered for the first time this past tournament to those that they have worked with for more than 30 years.
“The tournament is family to us,” said the Whamonds.
THE NORTHERN TRUST is set to kick off the FedExCup Playoffs at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, New York, August 22-27, 2017.
