Spokane, WA- The Victoria Royals’ Matthew Phillips recorded the game winning goal in overtime to cap off a four-point performance (2g-2a) as the club defeated the Spokane Chiefs 6-5 on Wednesday night.


The Royals’ Phillips buried a loose puck on a 4-on-3 powerplay in the extra frame to secure the club’s victory, and to move into a tie for first among all WHL players with 22 goals. Phillips, who assisted on goals scored by Dante Hannoun and Marsel Ibragimov, tallied his first marker of the contest in the middle frame on the man-advantage. Victoria’s other goals were recorded by Jared Dmytriw and Regan Nagy in the opening stanza.


Spokane received a hat-trick from Jaret Anderson-Dolan, along with a two-goal outing from Markson Bechtold.


Royals’ netminder Griffen Outhouse turned aside 28 of the 33 shots he faced. Spokane goaltender Jayden Sittler started in net and allowed three goals on six shots. Dawson Weatherill made a relief appearance for the Chiefs and stopped 13 of the 16 shots fired his way.


Victoria posted a mark of 3/6=50.0% on the powerplay, while Spokane went 2/2=100.0% on the man-advantage.


The Royals will conclude their road-trip with a pair of matches this weekend against the Portland Winterhawks on Friday, December 9th and the Tri-City Americans on Saturday, December 10th. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. against the Winterhawks and 7:05 p.m. versus the Americans.


Victoria returns to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre next week to face the Portland Winterhawks on Tuesday, December 13th and Wednesday, December 14th. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m.
