Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida – The PGA TOUR announced today that Jared Rice, formerly the vice president of sales and marketing for THE PLAYERS Championship, has been named the executive director of THE PLAYERS, effective immediately. THE PLAYERS is set to return to THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, May 9-14, 2017.
“It is an honor to have the opportunity to continue growing our flagship event,” Rice said. “I have great passion for THE PLAYERS and its leading role in the Northeast Florida community. As our team advances our primary goal of elevating the events’ stature on the world’s stage, we look forward to continuing to work with the dedicated volunteers, sponsors and charities that make THE PLAYERS such an impactful showcase of our region.”
Rice joined THE PLAYERS staff in 2010 as the director of sales and marketing; and he was promoted to vice president in 2016. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, Rice was named the top sales person for PGA TOUR-owned events recognizing increased activation at THE PLAYERS among regional and national partners. Under Rice’s leadership, THE PLAYERS sales team has seen substantial revenue growth for the event each year.
“THE PLAYERS Championship will continue to be a showcase of excellence in professional golf and is well-positioned to grow to new heights with the accomplished and driven team that we have in place,” said PGA TOUR Deputy Commissioner Jay Monahan, who will assume the role of commissioner in 2017. “Jared has been instrumental in contributing to the success of THE PLAYERS and his background in sales, marketing and management, as well as his active involvement in the Northeast Florida community, will make him a strong leader of the PGA TOUR’s flagship event.”
Prior to his position with THE PLAYERS, Rice served in Business Development and Global Licensing at the PGA TOUR for four years. While in those departments, he oversaw development of TOUR licensing programs worldwide and assisted with the sale of PGA TOUR title sponsorships and official marketing partner sponsorships. Rice joined the PGA TOUR from the Detroit Red Wings organization after having spent five years with the Walt Disney Company during their ownership of Major League Baseball’s Anaheim Angels and the NHL’s Mighty Ducks.
Rice was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Sports Marketing and Business Administration. He is actively involved in the Northeast Florida community, where he has served on the board of directors for the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, the Ponte Vedra Chamber of Commerce, the St. Vincent’s Tradition Board and the Winston Family YMCA.
With his new role as executive director of THE PLAYERS, Rice replaces Matt Rapp, who has been the executive director since 2010. Rapp was recently named senior vice president of Championship Management, and he will oversee TOUR-owned and operated tournaments on the PGA TOUR, including THE PLAYERS Championship.
Rice and his wife Sheila have two sons, Brady, 10, and Nolan, 7.
