Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Kelowna Rockets forward Calvin Thurkauf has been named the WHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 11, 2016.
Thurkauf registered 10 points (8G-2A) in four games to help the Kelowna Rockets go 3-1-0-0 this past week.
On Wednesday, December 7, Thurkauf registered his first career hat trick in a resounding 6-1 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds, being named first star in the process. The 19-year-old product of Zug, Switzerland, followed up with one goal in a 3-2 overtime win at Tri-City on Friday, December 9, earning second star recognition. On Saturday, December 10, Thurkauf collected two goals and two assists in a 7-3 road win over the Kootenay ICE and was named first star. Finally, he notched another two goals on Sunday, December 11, in a 6-5 loss at Lethbridge and was once again named second star.
Thurkauf is currently second in scoring on the Rockets with 31 points (17G-14A) in 28 games.
For the second consecutive year, Thurkauf is set to represent his country at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, being named to Switzerland’s roster last week.
The 6-foot-2, 203-pound forward was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the seventh round (185th) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Originally a first round pick (59th) of the Kelowna Rockets at the 2015 CHL Import Draft, Thurkauf is in his second season with the Rockets and has suited up in 89 career WHL regular season games, collecting 76 points (35G-41A).
