SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipotoannounced today that the club has requested unconditional release waivers on right-handed pitcher Arquimedes Caminero to allow him to pursue an opportunity to play in Japan.
Caminero, 29, was 2-3 with 1 save and a 3.56 ERA (24 ER, 60.2 IP) with 50 strikeouts in 57 relief appearances with Pittsburgh & Seattle. With Seattle, he was 1-1 with a 3.66 ERA (8 ER, 19.2 IP) with 18 strikeouts in 18 relief appearances. He was acquired from Pittsburgh in exchange for a player to be named later and a conditional player to be named later (LHP Jake Brentz and RHP Pedro Vasquez) on Aug. 6. With Pittsburgh he was 1-2 with 1 save and a 3.51 ERA (16 ER, 41.0 IP with 32 strikeouts in 39 relief appearances with the Pirates. He made three rehab appearances with Indianapolis after being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad (May 25-June 11).
In parts of four Major League seasons, he is 7-5 with 1 save and a 3.83 ERA (66 ER, 155.0 IP) with 143 strikeouts in 149 games, all relief appearances, with Miami (2013-14), Pittsburgh (2015-16) and Seattle (2016). He was signed by the Florida Marlins as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2005.
