Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell today announced the team has acquired defenseman Austin Strand and a sixth-round pick in the 2019 Bantam Draft pick from the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for defenseman Brandon Schuldhaus.
“We are happy to add Austin to our team as we prepare for the second half of the season,” said Farwell. “Austin is an experienced defenseman with a physical presence. This year defense is at a real premium so he is a very solid addition.”
Strand, from Calgary, is 6’3 and 190 pounds and a right-hand shot. This season with the Rebels, he has appeared in 38 games and has one goal and 14 assists for 15 points with 12 penalty minutes. In three seasons with the Rebels Strand has appeared in 163 games and has seven goals and 34 assists for 41 points with 105 penalty minutes.
Schuldhaus had two goals and three assists for five points with 30 penalty minutes in 33 games this season. He has appeared in 90 regular season games with the T-Birds over two seasons and has four goals and seven assists for 11 points with 58 penalty minutes.
The T-Birds have a home-and-home series with the Portland Winterhawks this weekend. The Winterhawks are at ShoWare Center tonight for a 7:35pm puck drop. The T-Birds travel to Portland on Saturday for the annual New Year’s Eve game against the Winterhawks. Puck drop on Saturday is 7:30pm.
