Calgary, AB – The Vancouver Giants overcame a 4-2 third period deficit to defeat the Calgary Hitmen 5-4 in a shootout on Monday afternoon at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Ty Ronning, Tyler Benson, Dylan Plouffe and Matt Barberis scored for the Giants while James Malm bagged the shootout winner.
Ronning opened the scoring at 5:17 after the second period, moments after an important save by Vancouver goalie David Tendeck on Calgary’s Andrei Grishakov. Benson made it 2-0 for the Giants 49 seconds after Ronning’s marker, firing a hard wrist shot past Calgary goaltender Kyle Dumba from off the rush. The Hitmen responded with an even strength goal from Jakob Stukel and a power play marker from Matteo Gennaro to tie the game before the end of the middle frame.
Calgary struck twice in the first three minutes to the third period, getting goals from Gennaro and Beck Malenstyn, to go ahead 4-2. Plouffe pulled Vancouver to within one goal, scoring on a long wrist shot at 4:44, and Barberis tied the game with 1:11 remaining in regulation time, beating Dumba on a slap shot from the point while Tendeck watched from the Giants’ bench.
Overtime solved nothing, and the Giants got shootout markers from Jack Flaman, Ronning and Malm to earn the extra point.
The Giants out shot the Hitmen 40-38. Vancouver went 0-for-4 on the power play.
The G-Men will continue their road trip on Wednesday night against the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place. Face-off is set for 6:00pm.
The Giants will be back at the Langley Events Centre on Friday, January 13th, against the Moose Jaw Warriors.
