Not one, not two, not three but four was the number of unanswered goals that the Swift Current Broncos put up to eliminate a three-goal deficit and beat the pesky Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-4 on Tuesday night at the Credit Union i-Plex.
The Broncos started quickly as Calvin Spencer redirected a wrist shot from team captain Glenn Gawdin by Hurricanes’ goaltender Stuart Skinner to give his team the early 1-0 advantage.
The Hurricanes responded with two goals courtesy of Giorgio Estephan as he scored his 20th and 21st goals of the season to place the Broncos in a 2-1 deficit through the opening 20 minutes.
Igor Merezhko found the back of the net with a long point shot that got by a screened Travis Child on a Hurricanes power play to extend their lead to 3-1. That score would later become 4-1 after Hurricanes captain Tyler Wong scored through a mad scramble in front of the Bronco net. This resulted in the Broncos calling a timeout to regroup and it certainly paid off.
Broncos leading goal scorer Tyler Steenbergen tipped in his 27th of the season off a point shot that came from defenceman Sahvan Khaira.
Max Lajoie who was earlier named the Crescent Point Leader of the Month for December buried his seventh of the year on a seeing-eye point shot to cut the Hurricanes advantage down to 4-3.
The goals kept coming as New Jersey Devils prospect Colby Sissons one-timed a blast by Skinner to tie it up 4-4. Shots on goal were 28-25 for the Broncos heading to the final period.
On a Broncos power play, Spencer recorded his second of the night with assists coming from Arthur Miller and Max Lajoie. The Broncos were constantly putting pressure on the Hurricanes and limited their scoring chances the rest of the way, allowing only eight shots against in a 5-4 win.
Swift Current went 2/6 on the power play while Lethbridge finished 2/3. Shots on goal were 43-33 in favour of Swift Current.
The Swift Current Broncos have now won seven of their last eight games and look to continue that trend on Friday night when they welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm CST.
