TORONTO, Ont. – Imperial’s Esso brand has renewed its premier partnership with Hockey Canada and extended the company’s commitment to Canada’s game through the 2023-24 season.

“Hockey Canada delivers on its mission of creating positive hockey experiences at all levels, and for all participants in the game, through the support of our partners such as Imperial and its Esso brand,” said Mike Ross, chief business officer, Hockey Canada. “We are in a fortunate position as a national sport body to have many long-term partners who have embraced our work in the recruitment, retention, and celebration of the game from the grassroots levels to our national teams. With this renewal, Hockey Canada and Esso celebrate what will become 40 years of premier partnership in investing in Canadians through hockey from coast to coast to coast. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Esso on its long-established hockey programs, and help grow the game across the country.”

Among Esso’s many initiatives with Hockey Canada are:

  • Esso Medals and Certificates of Achievement:Established in 1981, the Esso Medals and Certificates of Achievement recognize players who have demonstrated sportsmanship qualities on and off the ice; to-date, more than two million medals and 30 million certificates have been awarded to boys and girls who have demonstrated they are champions on and off the ice.
  • Esso Fun Days:A cornerstone of Hockey Canada’s recruitment of female hockey participants, Esso Fun Days introduce girls and women of all ages to the game, and are designed to familiarize beginners to female hockey at no cost for first-time participants, in a fun, positive, and non-threatening environment.
  • Esso Cup:Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, first held in 2009, is hosted in a different community every spring and celebrates the best of Midget-aged female hockey in Canada. Its predecessor, the Esso Women’s Nationals, were held from 1982 to 2008.
  • Hockey Canada Foundation:During the 2015-16 season, Esso customers used their Hockey Canada-branded price privilege cards to save on their purchases and give back to the Hockey Canada Foundation, resulting in a $65,000 donation by Esso at the end of the season.

For more than 80 years the Esso name has been synonymous with hockey; Imperial has been a premier sponsor of Hockey Canada for 33 years.

“Hockey is part of our Canadian heritage, it gives us a sense of national pride,” said Andrew Mackay, retail fuels manager for Imperial. “Because we have a presence in cities, towns, and villages across the country, Imperial’s sponsorship activities are focused on hockey events and programs that support kids and the community.  Our many links with the national game are directed toward encouraging young players to take the challenge and shoot for their goals and dreams. From medals of achievement and our support of amateur hockey programs to sponsorship of our national men’s, women’s and sledge hockey teams, the Hockey Hall of Fame and our involvement with Canada’s professional hockey teams, Imperial is deeply rooted in the game. We are excited about continuing our relationship with Hockey Canada for another six seasons and look forward to working with them to continue supporting minor, grassroots hockey from coast to coast.”
