The worst kept secret in golf became official on Sunday. More than three months ago, news leaked that World No. 1 Jason Day was joining Nike Golf, the Swoosh confirmed in a press release that it had signed the Aussie to a multi-year contract.
The agreement will see Day wear Nike footwear apparel, headwear and gloves starting this week at the TOUR’s SBS Tournament of Champions event.
“Joining Nike is a dream come true,” Day said. “The brand is synonymous with the world’s best athletes. I’m honored and can’t wait to be part of the team and working closely with Nike to take my game, and the sport of golf, to even higher levels.”
Since turning pro in 2006, Day has recorded ten TOUR titles, including the 2015 PGA Championship. Day picked up three victories during the 2015-16 season, with all of them coming in a two-month stretch that started with back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play, and ended with a dominant wire-to-wire performance at THE PLAYERS Championship.
Day is the first high-profile name to sign with Nike Golf since the company announced last August that it would not longer produce clubs, bags and ball, instead shifting its focus to the golf footwear and apparel business.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Jason to the Nike Golf team and our family of athletes,” said Daric Ashford, President of Nike Golf. “He’s an incredible player who has demonstrated tremendous work ethic and amazing resilience over the course of his career. We’re excited to help him chase more championships in the coming years.”
The addition of Day to its staff means Nike Golf now boasts the top two players in the Official World Golf Ranking in Day and Rory McIlroy.
