Tale of the Weekend
VICTORIA – The UVic Vikes men’s basketball team will get the chance to get the second half of their season off on the right foot when they travel to Kamloops to take on the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack on January 6 and 7.
Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Friday with the second game getting underway at 7:00 p.m. at the Tournament Capital Centre on Saturday.
The Vikes need to start piling up the wins in the second half of the season to put themselves back into the playoff conversation. They are currently 15th in Canada West with a record of 2-6.
The WolfPack have rebounded after a tough start to the season and enter the second half of the season in eighth with a record of 5-5.
The last time these teams met in regular season play was in the 2013-14 season. The two split a pair of games in Victoria with the WolfPack handing the Vikes one of the only three losses they suffered in the regular season that year.
Last Time Out
It was a busy holiday season for the Vikes. The team travelled to Winnipeg to take part in the Wesmen Classic Tournament, where they finished in fourth with a 1-2 record.
A big 90-66 opening night win over the University of Brandon Bobcats sent the Vikes to a tough semifinal game against the undefeated, in Canada West play, University of Alberta Golden Bears.
It looked as though an upset was in the cards with the Vikes leading going into the fourth quarter, but a late push from the Golden Bears led them to a 82-76 victory.
The third place game was a close affair between the Vikes and host University of Winnipeg Wesmen with the Wesmen just holding on to defeat UVic 64-63.
The WolfPack were also in action over the holidays, winning both games they played in a tournament taking place in Lancaster, California. Both games went right to the wire as the ‘Pack defeated West Coast Baptist College 97-94 and the University of Antelope Valley 76-75.
By the Numbers
10: Since the start of the regular season Fifth-year forward Grant Sitton has led the Vikes in scoring in 10 out of 13 games.
18.6: The number of points per game Volodymyr Iegorov is scoring to lead TRU.
Craig Beaucamp, Vikes head coach
“They are all really important games for us from here on out. We are fighting to make the playoffs and Thompson Rivers is in that fight as well. It’s about taking it one game at a time and taking care of business.”
“We had really good competition in Winnipeg, we played well in all three of our games. Had a tough game against an undefeated Alberta team in which we were leading late into the game. We got exactly what we wanted out of those games in Winnipeg, good, tough U Sports games that got us ready to go.
