SAANICH, B.C. – Dale McCabe scored with 51.8 seconds remaining in overtime as the Saanich Braves rallied to beat the Victoria Cougars 3-2 on Friday night.

Victoria found themselves down a man when Jordan Passmore was called for slashing.  Playing four on three, Nick Guerra made a short little pass to McCabe who wristed a shot from just inside the blue line that sailed over the shoulder of Liam McCloskey.

Kelowna Rockets prospect Ted Brennan tied the game with one minute and four seconds left in the third period.

The game was scoreless after one period and tied 1-1 after two.

Passmore opened the scoring 19 seconds into the second period after burying a Shane Kime rebound past Bryce Schiebel for his seventh goal of the season.

Then at 15:31, Gavin Grewal redirected an Evan Horvath shot to tie the game.

Akila Sato-Gaudreau gave Victoria the lead with just over seven minutes to play in regulation when his shot from the half wall whizzed past Schiebel who was out of position on the play.

But at 18:56 and with Schiebel on the bench for an extra attacker, Brennan one-timed a centering pass from Guerra over the outstretched glove of McCloskey for the game tying goal.

McCabe then scored in overtime to pull the Braves to within three points of Victoria who still leads the South Island Division.

Shots on goal during extra time favoured Saanich 3-2.

Each team had three power play opportunities.

Michael Sproule made his Braves debut two days after getting traded from Peninsula.  And because of a flight delay in Denver, Colorado due to weather, Brandon Fushimi was not in the Saanich lineup.

Elsewhere in the VIJHL:  Kerry Park Islanders 4, Peninsula Panthers 2.  Campbell River Storm 5, Oceanside Generals 0.

Next game for Victoria is Thursday, January 12 versus the Oceanside Generals.  Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 7:00 p.m.
