Broncos Lose Heartbreaker to Americans in Shootout

The Swift Current Broncos were attempting to end the recent winning ways of the Tri-City Americans who entered tonight’s contest on a five-game winning streak. The Broncos forced overtime and got six shots on goal in the extra frame but a shootout was needed to determine a winner and it was the Americans that prevailed by a score of 4-3.

Ryley Lindgren scored his first career goal as a Bronco as fans were still filing into their seats. The goal came just 25 seconds into the contest with Colby Sissons and Riley Stotts getting the assists.

Americans forward Jordan Topping scored his first of two goals midway through the first period, tying the score 1-1 in what was a physical period of play.

Penalty kill woes continued to haunt the Broncos as Topping scored his second of the night midway through the middle frame to place the Americans up 2-1 and the score remained that way into the final period.

Broncos captain Glenn Gawdin tied this matinee up 2-2 early in the third period before Tyler Steenbergen scored his club-leading 33rd marker of the season to put the Broncos up 3-2. Terrific fore-checking by Aleksi Heponiemi resulted in the Finnish forward freeing himself up, skating around the Americans cage and dishing out a beautiful pass to a cutting Steenbergen who made no mistake snapping it home.

The Americans did not quit as their power play went to work with five minutes remaining in regulation. With Gawdin in the penalty box for cross checking, Morgan Geekie received a cross ice pass from Tyler Sandhu and fired it short side on Broncos goaltender Jordan Papirny to tie it up 3-3 and force overtime.

Swift Current was awarded a full two minute power play to begin overtime after Nolan Yaremko took a high sticking penalty, but the Broncos could not find the back of the twine despite several golden scoring opportunities.

A shootout was required and the Americans escaped with the 4-3 victory, scoring twice in the shootout while the Broncos got a lone goal from Lindgren.

Shots on goal were 32-31 in favour of Tri-City. Swift Current went 0/6 on the power play and Tri-City finished 2/5.

The Broncos have to saddle up right away as they welcome the Red Deer Rebels to the Credit Union i-Plex at 4:00pm CT.
