VICTORIA – It was a successful start to 2017 for Vikes swimming as the team wracked up the podium finishes, competing in both the Vancouver Island Regional Championship and B.C. Senior Circuit Meet over the weekend.
Competing at the Vancouver Island Regional Championship, second-year Vike Kara Wilson made her U Sports qualifying time in the 200-metre breastroke with a time of 2:36.81.
Although winning his event in a time of 2:05.27, third-year Vike Sebastien Michaud just missed his U Sports standard time by a slim .06 of a second, with fellow varsity teammate Thomas van Maren coming in second at 2:09.01.
In the women’s 15 & Over 800-metre freestyle Anna Letkeman came in first place with a time of 9:32.73.
Also having quite the night on the first day of they competition was Justin Howe taking first place with a time of 16:31.52, and his UVic teammate Jake Beyak in second place with a time of 16:34.80, just behind Justin.
On the second day at the event in the women’s 200-metre IM, Allison Hampton finished second in 2:27.85.
Vike Kara Wilson topped off her U Sports qualifying time from prelims by taking off an additional one-tenth of a second at finals to come in first place overall, with rookie teammate Andrea Farmer finishing in second with a time of 2:41.98. UVic’s Juliana Bartemucci took in the hometown advantage as she touched 3rd with a time of 2:43.97.
Baylee Munro came in 2nd at 25.25 in the 15 & Over men’s category.
15 & Over women’s had Allison Hampton finish in second with a 31.03 in the 50-metre butterfly.
In the women’s 200-metre freestyle Vikes swimmer Tabitha Craig finished in third. The Vikes were also present in the men’s 15 & Over event as Jeremy Lynn came in first in a time of 1:57.68 and Jake Beyak came in 2nd.
Switching over to the 100-metre breaststroke, 15 & Over men’s had UVic swimmer Baylee Munro in first with a 1:07.47. 15 & Over women’s had the Vikes clean up nicely in the final, with Kara Wilson in first with a 1:13.31, with teammates Andrea Farmer and Juliana Bartemucci touching close behind with a 1:16.17 and 1:16.76 respectively.
Last but not least, the 200-metre butterfly in the 15 & Over men’s division had rookie Vike Justin Howe coming in 2nd with a time of 2:10.22.
Jeremy Lynn won the men’s 400-metre freestyle in a time 4:08.49.
Kara Wilson, Juliana Bartemucci and Andrea Farmer came in first, second and third in the women’s 50-metre breaststroke in 34.16, 35.63 and 35.81 respectively. Baylee Munro won the men’s event in 30.95.

Meanwhile on the Lower Mainland at the B.C. Senior Circuit Meet, a group of the Vikes raced tough and tested themselves in a meet for the first time in over a month, after a hard Christmas training camp. Buzz Mallender and Kaitlin Gervais came away with big wins, while Bailey Espersen, Jon McKay and Victoria Mock all had top 3 finishes.
