Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Lethbridge Hurricanes captain Tyler Wong has been named the WHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 15, 2017.
Wong registered 10 points (5G-5A) in four games to help the Hurricanes collect points in four consecutive games, going 2-0-1-1 this past week.
On Wednesday, January 11, Wong notched two points (1G-1A) in a 7-4 win at Edmonton. On Friday, January 13, he managed another two points (1G-1A) in a 6-5 shootout loss versus Prince George, being named third star for his efforts. The next night – Saturday, January 14 – Wong struck for two more points (1G-1A) in a 6-5 win versus Edmonton. He rounded out the weekend with a four-point performance (2G-2A) on Sunday, January 15, in a 6-5 overtime loss at Calgary and was named second star.
A 20-year-old product of Cochrane, AB, Wong currently sits fourth in the WHL scoring race with 66 points (33G-33A) in 43 games. His 33 goals are good for third in WHL goal scoring.
On Tuesday, January 3, Wong was named the WHL Player of the Month for December after posting 25 points (8G-17A) in 12 games, leading the Hurricanes to a record of 8-2-2-0.
The 5-foot-9, 176-pounnd right winger was originally a fifth round pick (101st) of the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. In his fifth season with the Hurricanes, Wong has amassed 255 points (125G-130A) in 291 career regular season contests.
SILVERTIPS’ HART NAMED
WHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Everett Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart has been named the WHL Goaltender of the Week and the league nominee for Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending January 15, 2017.
An 18-year-old product of Sherwood Park, AB, Hart went 1-0-1-0 this past week, with a 1.92 goals-against average, .933 save percentage and one shutout. Returning to the Silvertips following a silver-medal effort with Canada at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship, Hart backstopped Everett to a 4-0 shutout win at Kamloops on Friday, January 13, being named first star for his 22-save performance. Back home on Saturday, January 14, Hart was once again named first star as he made 34 saves in a 4-3 overtime loss versus Seattle.
Hart was previously recognized as the Vaughn WHL Goaltender of the Month for November after going 6-2-1-0 with a 1.11 GAA, .959 SV% and three shutouts. As a result of his outstanding efforts, the reigning CHL Goaltender of the Year was also named WHL Goaltender of the Week on two occasions to close November – for the week ending November 20 and the week ending November 27. For the week ending November 27, Hart was also named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week as the top netminder in the Canadian Hockey League.
Through 26 appearances this season, Hart is 17-3-5-0, helping the Silvertips jump ahead of the U.S. Division pack. His 1.85 GAA and five shutouts both rank first in the WHL and his .928 SV% is good enough for second.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound goaltender was a second round pick (48th) of the Philadelphia Flyers at the 2016 NHL Draft. In his third season with the Everett Silvertips, Hart has amassed a career record of 70-32-8-7, with a 2.14 GAA, .919 SV% and 15 shutouts.
Hart was originally an eighth round pick (158th) of the Everett Silvertips at the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.
